Why isn't Phil in any WikiHow Article?!

How to Test a wikiHow Article for a Quality Review Stamp

Steps

Doing Basic Review Testing

  1. Choose an article that you can "test drive" within the next few days.If you have a topic in mind that you can complete from beginning to end, feel free to ask Anna if it's a good candidate for review. Generally, it just needs to be a topic where you can demonstrate that you achieved the desired end result (ideally, with a screenshot or photograph), so review tends to work best in areas like technology (see second method), crafts, or recipes. The best article candidates tend to be fairly simple and straightforward, with methods that would work for almost all cases.
  2. Follow all the steps in the article, from start to finish.
    • As you go, check both the written method and the images. If anything looks off with the text, you can dive in and fix it! If you want to replace the images, you can, or you can leave feedback or an image request for the Wikivisual team.
  3. Take a picture. If you were successful in finishing the steps, take a picture or screenshot of the finished product. It doesn't have to be the best picture in the world, but shoot for an image that shows you completed the task, especially for more complicated areas like craft topics or recipes.
  4. Check the article you reviewed!Once the new review stamp data is imported to the review system, your name will appear on the article.

Using the Tech Widget

  1. Find a tech topic that you want to review. The best candidates are simple tasks that are easy to complete from beginning to end, with a definitive sign of whether they worked or not.
    • Feel free to ask Anna if you're not sure whether the topic is a good one for review.
    • Articles dedicated to one program or platform tend to be easier to review than ones that would require you to have several devices or types of software.
  2. Follow all the steps in the article, from start to finish.
  3. Make sure the process works as written. The article should deliver on the promise of its title. For that reason, topics that work in some cases or for some people aren't great candidates for review (they might still be very helpful and useful topics, though, even without a review stamp).
    • Ideally, check both the written method and the screenshots. If anything looks off with the writing, you can fix it! If you want to replace screenshots, you can, or you can leave feedback or an image request for the Wikivisual team.
  4. Open up the tech widget. To get to this experimental feature, add?action=edit&tech_widget=1&advanced=trueto the end of the article URL in your browser.
    • The widget will only show in edit mode, and only in advanced editing.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page, below the editing window.Fill out the Tech Article Data there.
    • Pick the closest possible product for the tech topic described. If no category fits the topic, it may not be a good candidate for review; generally, the more specific topics on commonplace products are best for review, not broad ones or ones on unusual products.
    • Check the box next to the relevant platform. These choices are intentionally few for now; if none of the options apply, you can pick "Other".
    • Check the box next to "Tested" if - and only if - you actually tested the steps and verified they work as written.
  6. Click "Publish" to save your changes.Even if you didn't add any wikitext, just click Publish to process your review. Your edit won't appear in the history, but if you tested the platform, a "wikiHow Technology Team" stamp should appear in the right-hand corner of the desktop page.
    • You can also verify that the widget info was stored in the database by re-opening the widget link on that page.

It is possible to do so, for tech reviews in particular. However, ideally, community tested articles should be reviewed by someone other than the author.

  • Pay attention to how clear the text and images are. If anything is unclear, try to fix it. If you can't fix it, make note of it.
  • If you add a wikiHow Technology Team stamp by mistake, you can just re-open the Tech Widget, uncheck the box that says "Tested", and re-publish your changes. The stamp should go away again.
